During the hands-on sessions we will try to use the hardware and software facilities available at the ARC node.
However, we request the participants to:

* bring their own laptop to access via ssh to the ARC cluster (linux or mac)

* download the latest version of CASA (4.5.0) from the website http://casa.nrao.edu/casa_obtaining.shtml install it on the laptop and verify that it is working properly. Older versions of CASA might not be suitable for the data that we will be using and will be slower than the last one, so please upgrade to this version if you have already a CASA version installed. Notice that it will be necessary only as a backup in case of malfunctioning of the ARC cluster or of the web links. You will soon receive further instructions on the download of the data that will be used as backup.
The workshop will take place in the [http://www.bo.cnr.it/index-eng.html CNR Research Area] in Bologna, room 216 (main hall, first floor).

The [http://www.ira.inaf.it/Home.html Institute of Radioastronomy] is located in the CNR Research Area in Bologna. It can be reached by following the directions given [http://www.bo.cnr.it/comearrivare-eng.html here].<br>
A selection of hotels in Bologna can be found in this [http://www.bo.cnr.it/congressi/alberghi.html list].

If you have questions, please contact the Italian ARC :

== Instructions for the hands-on sessions ==
During the hands-on sessions we will try to use the hardware and software facilities available at the ARC node.
However, we request the participants to:

* bring their own laptop to access via ssh to the ARC cluster (linux or mac)

* download from the website https://launchpad.net/apsynsim/trunk/1.2b the file for the software APSYNSIM 1.2b in the version suited for your own operative system and verify that it is working properly

Please contact us for any problem.

The thesis project consists in the study of the properties of a sample of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) selected by Spoon et al. (2007)
on the basis of being obscured (deep Silicate feature at 9.7 micron) with little star formation (low 6.2 micron PAH equivalent width).
The X-ray data from Chandra, XMM-Newton and NuSTAR will provide information on the source spectral properties over a broad energy range and, in
particular, on the level of obscuration, while ALMA data will be used to investigate the presence of molecular gas. One of the primary goals of the project consists in the study of any possible link between the obscuration observed in X-rays with the gas traced in the host galaxy by ALMA.

The ARC staff will support the ALMA users in all the steps of their projects, by helping in

* using and teaching how to use the ALMA tools for proposal preparation and submission
* tracking the project status
* data reduction with CASA
* archive mining

ARC members expertise in several branches of mm and submm interferometry and in handling large data sets could be requested through tutorials and face-to-face support activities.

Users who request a face-to-face support will find a reference staff member experienced in reducing interferometric data using CASA and versatile in the use of the ALMA tools.

System managers are dedicated to both the software and hardware requirements of the ARC-operations, including the application of GRID technology to ALMA data reduction.

Non-staff members could contribute to the ARC activity by supervising students, by building scientific collaborations with the staff members, or helping with staff members recruitment and funding.
If you are interested in contributing to the ARC activities please contact the ARC coordinator.

Students (both undergrad and doc) could ask the staff members for thesis on ALMA subjects to be done in collaboration with the ARC node staff.
